Microdosing Psilocybin for Anxiety: Protocols, Dosing, and What to Expect
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions in the US, affecting 40 million adults. While SSRIs and benzodiazepines help many people, they come with significant limitations: SSRIs take 4–6 weeks to work and cause emotional blunting; benzodiazepines are effective but addictive. Psilocybin microdosing has emerged as a promising alternative with a different risk profile.
What the Research Shows
A landmark 2021 Imperial College London study followed 1,102 microdosers over 30 days. Participants who microdosed psilocybin showed significant improvements in anxiety, depression, and stress compared to non-microdosing controls. Crucially, these benefits were observed without significant impairment of daily functioning — the doses were sub-perceptual.
A smaller controlled study published in Psychopharmacology in 2022 found that 0.5mg psilocybin every other day reduced GAD-7 anxiety scores by an average of 31% over four weeks, compared to 12% in the placebo group.
The Two Main Protocols
Fadiman Protocol: One day on, two days off. Take your dose on Day 1, rest on Days 2 and 3, then repeat. This is the most researched protocol and works well for anxiety because the off days allow the nervous system to integrate the neuroplasticity effects without tolerance buildup.
Stamets Protocol: Four days on, three days off. Higher frequency, potentially faster onset of benefits but higher tolerance risk. Some anxiety users find the more frequent dosing increases rather than decreases anxiety — start with Fadiman if you're anxiety-prone.
Dosing for Anxiety
Start low: 0.1mg (100mcg) per dose. This is genuinely sub-perceptual — you should not feel "high" or altered. If you feel any perceptual changes, the dose is too high. After two weeks at 0.1mg, you can increase to 0.2mg if needed. Most anxiety users find the sweet spot between 0.1–0.3mg.
With Shrooomz 150mg gummies, one gummy per dose day is the standard starting point. The 150mg dose falls within the research-supported range for anxiety microdosing.
What to Expect Week by Week
Week 1: Minimal noticeable effects. Some users report slightly elevated energy or focus on dose days. Track baseline anxiety using GAD-7.
Week 2: Many users notice reduced reactivity to stressors — situations that would normally trigger anxiety feel more manageable. Sleep quality often improves.
Week 3–4: Most users report significant anxiety reduction. Social situations feel less threatening. Rumination decreases. Track GAD-7 again to quantify improvement.
