What Lion's Mane Actually Does
Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) contains two unique compounds — hericenones and erinacines — that stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) in the brain. NGF promotes the growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons. It's essential for neuroplasticity.
This is the same neuroplasticity mechanism that psilocybin activates, but through a different pathway. Lion's mane works more slowly and subtly, building NGF levels over weeks rather than triggering an acute neuroplasticity event.
The Clinical Evidence
A 2009 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Japan found that lion's mane supplementation significantly reduced depression and anxiety scores in menopausal women over 4 weeks. A 2020 pilot study found improved cognitive function and reduced depression in adults with mild cognitive impairment. A 2023 study found acute cognitive improvements in young adults after a single dose.
Brain Fog Specifically
"Brain fog" — mental cloudiness, difficulty concentrating, slow thinking — is one of the most common complaints in depression, long COVID, and chronic fatigue. Lion's mane appears to address brain fog through NGF stimulation, which supports the myelin sheaths around neurons (improving "signal quality" of neural transmission).

How to Use It
