Psilocybin mushrooms have been used by humans for thousands of years. Here is the complete history.

Ancient Use in Mesoamerica

Archaeological evidence suggests psilocybin mushrooms were used in religious ceremonies in Mesoamerica for at least 3,000 years. Stone mushroom effigies dating to 1000 BCE have been found in Guatemala and Mexico.

The Aztecs called psilocybin mushrooms teonanácatl — "flesh of the gods." They were used in religious ceremonies to communicate with deities and gain spiritual insight. Spanish colonizers documented and attempted to suppress their use in the 16th century.

The Mazatec people of Oaxaca, Mexico, maintained a continuous tradition of ceremonial mushroom use through the colonial period. The mushrooms were used in healing ceremonies called veladas, conducted by healers called curanderos.

R. Gordon Wasson and Western Discovery

In 1955, R. Gordon Wasson — a banker and amateur mycologist — traveled to Oaxaca and participated in a Mazatec velada conducted by the healer María Sabina. He was the first Westerner to participate in a psilocybin mushroom ceremony.

In 1957, Wasson published an account of his experience in Life magazine — the first widely read Western account of psilocybin mushrooms. The article sparked enormous interest.

Albert Hofmann's Synthesis

Albert Hofmann — the Swiss chemist who had already synthesized LSD in 1943 — isolated and synthesized psilocybin and psilocin in 1958 while working at Sandoz Laboratories. This made pure psilocybin available for scientific research for the first time.

The 1960s Research Era

The 1960s saw hundreds of studies on psilocybin and other psychedelics for therapeutic applications. Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert conducted the Harvard Psilocybin Project (1960–1962), studying psilocybin's effects on personality and behavior.

The research was promising but chaotic. The cultural association of psychedelics with the counterculture movement, and the political backlash it provoked, led to the Controlled Substances Act of 1970.

Prohibition (1970–2000)

The Controlled Substances Act classified psilocybin as Schedule I — "no accepted medical use, high potential for abuse." Research effectively stopped for 30 years.

The Modern Renaissance (2000–Present)

In 2000, Johns Hopkins received FDA approval for the first modern human psilocybin study. Roland Griffiths' 2006 landmark study in Psychopharmacology re-established psilocybin's scientific legitimacy.

Since then, the research has accelerated dramatically. The FDA granted Breakthrough Therapy designation for psilocybin in 2018. Oregon legalized supervised psilocybin therapy in 2020. Multiple Phase 3 trials are underway.
